To Distill or to Purify? What are the Differences Anyways?

Water isn’t really as simple as we think, there are actually many different types of water, crazy right? There is purified water, spring water, distilled water, and a many more past that. This article is to help you understand the differences between distilled water and purified water, and the benefits/risks of them.

Purified and distilled water are relatively similar. So similar, they are often confused for one another. So how do you tell the difference? Let’s start with distilled.

Although distilled water is a purified water, it reclassifies itself by pushing itself through a very rigorous process of filtration. You start by putting water in a pot, and heating it past the point of boiling, which is usually around 212 degrees fahrenheit. As the water boils, the pure water turns into steam, and through a process of separation, it will boil itself away from all of its minerals and contaminants. As the steam rises, it is sent through a specific device that captures and cools it down. As the steam cools, it will then be sent into a container or holding unit, somewhat of a drip format. From there, the water that remains in the pot is mostly just bacteria and contaminants.

So why would you want to do this tedious process? Well the pros of distilled are:

  • It’s pure and 100% clean.
  • It’s safe(ish).
  • It won’t give hard water stains; good for appliances.

Sure, distilled water is clean and safe, however there are also some cons, which include:

  • 100% clean isn’t ideal; It carries no minerals. This is also referred to as Nuclear or Atomic water, which is the process of loss of minerals. It doesn’t effectively hydrate you, so much that it can actually dehydrate you, if it was ALL you drank.
  • Safe ish, from above, means just like before, doesn’t meet the body's needs, so it’s not the healthiest thing for you.
  • It’s good in/on appliances, not the body.

So what exactly is purified water then? Purified water is water that has been mechanically filtered or processed to remove impurities and make it suitable for use. Purified water can also come from any source. However, the biggest aspect about purified water is that for something to legally be defined as purified water it must be reduced or removed of contaminants, viruses, bacteria minerals and anything else deemed harmful or tasteless, to extremely low levels. For size exclusion it has to be 0.01 microns, which is typically found in ceramic or hollow fiber membranes.

The Pros:

  • It is filtered. Stripped to a legal requirement on the contaminants.
  • It is healthy.
  • Still carries its minerals.
  • More convenient.

The Cons:

  • Some contaminants can still pass through.
  • Filters get clogged and have to be replaced more often.
  • More long term costs.

After reviewing and understanding the differences of the two, why would you want to put yourself through such a tedious process to obtain distilled, or even drink something that is more specific towards appliances?
